What We Do

The Destiny Trust works through various schemes which include:

Education and Self-Empowerment

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world-Nelson Mandela.

Our work is driven by the passion to address all problems that stand in the way of a child’s enjoyment of a healthy and fulfilling life. We recognize that we don’t have all the answers. We continually learn from our outcomes and refine our approach. This flexibility helps us to stay on top of issues and deliver relevant solutions to effectively serve the children. However, our dominant focus has been on the wellbeing, education and empowerment of children at risk.

Education 2Whatever their conditions in life, children have the same inner ability to be great. We strive to unlock their limitless potentials.

Education and self-empowerment are crucial aspects to achieving our goal of sustainable intervention in the life of every child. Education provides the opportunity of inclusion in the social and economic systems. We want children to have the basic capability to participate in the development of their society.

Education is the most basic tool they need to do this. Education does the work of motivating a child to challenge what he sees, hears, perceives, experiences and inspires him to seek practical solutions to human problems.

We impart ideas about self-empowerment and offer training for each child to develop skills in arts, crafts, music, writing, and programming. Children are assisted to discover how their strength, passion, talents and creativity are relevant to the social, economic and political development of Nigeria and the world.

We continually adopt innovative education initiatives. Our education projects include the Education Bridge Programme, Afterschool Learning, the Literacy Campaign, the School Enrolment drive, Back-to-School Programmes, School Support and the Teacher Training and Incentive Programme.

Rehabilitation and Care

Caring

We provide the atmosphere of love and acceptance that homeless children need to recreate a positive future

Hundreds of thousands of children are homeless and without care. Unless they find a safe place away from the elements of the street and someone to nurture them in love, they may never have the stability to live their promise. The Destiny Trust Home at Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos is home to as many of these children that our resources can cater to. We provide the stability and the atmosphere of love and acceptance that homeless children need to recreate a positive future. Our first intervention is to provide their basic needs-food, healthcare and clothing and assist every child recover from the trauma of abuse and the anti-social behaviour of street life.

Although our desire is that every rehabilitated child is re-integrated into the biological family, where the child is orphaned or the family cannot offer an environment for the child to grow and live a useful life, the Destiny Trust provides a foster home for continuing care till the age of maturity. We go beyond everyday involvement in provision of ordinary needs of the children for basic existence.  We focus on the total development of every child including aspects of character development, spirituality, literacy, creativity and civic responsibility. Ultimately, our desire is to help each member of the family identify his/her strength, and define within that self-concept, his purpose in life and his role as a member of the society. We assist the child to transform the hitherto traumatizing childhood experience into a creative spark, curiosity and zeal for social change. This is how we evolve a generation of future leaders and exemplary citizens.

Emergency Shelter

p3Through a short-term care programme, the Destiny Trust meets the immediate needs of identified street children such as food, clothing and medical care, while we attempt to understand them, earn their trust and consider more sustainable ways we can assist. Depending on the outcomes, we assist children to trace their family, and reunite with their families. We also carry out necessary follow-up and provide appropriate child support services within the setting of their biological family.

Family Empowerment

While we empower the individual child to discover the greatness within, we adopt sustainable programmes to build viable households where children can be the best they are destined to be. This is the way we address the broader challenges of social disorder, insecurity, lack and inequality. We adopt creative approaches depending on the peculiarities of each case. In most cases, we seek means of financial empowerment for the family to address domestic poverty and other imbalances that may negatively impact the development and interest of the child.
