For every child, the right to live, grow and thrive

SCROLL

Our Work

Our work is driven by the passion to address problems that stand in the way of children’s enjoyment of healthy and fulfilling life. We recognize that we don’t have all the answers. We continually learn from our outcomes and refine our approach. This flexibility helps us to stay on top of issues and deliver relevant solutions to effectively serve the children. However, our dominant focus has been on the wellbeing, education and empowerment of homeless children and other young people within vulnerable groups.

Education

Education and self-empowerment are crucial aspects to achieving our goal of sustainable intervention in the life of every child. Education provides the opportunity of inclusion in the social and economic systems. We want children to have the basic capability to participate in the development of their society. Education is the most basic tool they need to do this. Education does the work of motivating a child to challenge what he sees, hears, perceives, experiences and inspires him to seek practical solutions to human problems. We constantly adopt innovative ideas which enhance both education access and quality of learning for under-represented children. We eliminate barriers to the classroom, reintegrate children who have fallen out of the educational system due to poverty and homelessness. We drive literacy campaigns, accelerated learning programmes and afterschool assistance to assist disadvantaged children catch up on foundational learning and get the leverage they often need as they get back into the conventional school system. We go beyond putting children in school. When children are enrolled in under-resourced schools, we immediately engage in all efforts to give them a rewarding learning experience. We support under-resourced schools through upgrade of school infrastructure and provision of teaching resource.

Care and Rehabilitation

We address the needs of children who do not have the basic amenities for living. These children live in the poor environments where they are exposed to abuse, criminality and have no chance of meaningful survival. They are mostly orphans, children from extreme poor families and internally-displaced children. These children often miss the benefit of education and empowerment due to lack of a stable home environment. We run an in-centre care programme for this category of children where initial efforts to reintegrate them into the biological family is unsuccessful. We provide shelter, food, clothing and medical care. Beyond shelter, children have a loving home they can call their own at our residential learning centre located in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos. At the Centre, we focus on the total development of every child. Our desire is to help each member of the family identify his/her strength, and define within that self-concept, his/her purpose in life. It is always our joy to see each child recover from a traumatic past and transform that experience into a creative spark, curiosity and passion to make the world better. This is how we raise future leaders from among the children almost left behind.

EMPOWERMENT

Our desire is for every child to be free to make the right life choices and take up the power to pursue these with personal responsibility and self-determination. As children discover self-worth, we support them to also discover their power to break through the limits and overcome the sense of defeat, powerlessness and lack of influence over their own situations. Education is at the core of our empowerment strategy. That is why the goal of our education initiatives goes beyond bare literacy but focuses on providing access to information and training that help the children to question their world and experiences as they become aware of how they can use their own abilities and the resources available to them to improve their own lives and change the world. We provide life skills training to children and empower them with valuable skills in technology and various vocational fields including music, fashion, arts and creativity. Ultimately, we believe empowering the child has a direct impact on lifting households and communities from poverty. This is the way we address the broader issues of inclusive economic growth, social order and security.

FAMILY EMPOWERMENT

While we empower the individual child to discover the greatness within, we adopt creative approaches depending on the peculiarities of each case to empower families to address domestic poverty and other imbalances that may negatively impact the development and interest of the child. Our desire is to build viable households where children can live and thrive. Women are at the heart of our family empowerment strategy. In most cases, we find that women hold the best possibilities in efforts to reposition the household to protect and provide for the children.
